in South Luangwa

An old-school multi-day walking safari in one of Africa’s finest wildernesses

EXPLORE

Walking Safaris in South Luangwa

The ultimate safari luxury is to get deep into game-rich country where there’s no-one else around. The best way of ensuring this is to head out on foot – away from roads and, and cars, any hustle and bustle.

There is a timeless quality about approaching big game on foot that touches something deep in our own psyches and the animals we encounter.

Walking safaris have been undertaken in the Luangwa Valley for over half a century – nowhere has it been done longer – and the fact that the craft evolved here is no coincidence, as the habitat is ideally suited to it – glades of riverine forest mixed with open plains, drying lagoons and perennial rivers.

On a walking mobile safari you’ll walk from one temporary tented camp to the next (your bags being transported for you), which allows the time and opportunity to see Luangwa at it’s very best. Led by one of Zambia’s top wildlife guides you sure to safely encounter a myriad of creatures great and small. The expeditionary nature of the safari and the small group size (a maximum of six) ensures a very rarefied adventure indeed.

WHY WE LOVE LIGHT-TOUCHWALKING SAFARIS

Mobile walking safaris are by their nature light-touch – stripping away unnecessary accoutrements to what will fit in the back of the support lorry.

The expeditionary nature of the safari provides a sense of purpose, the need to get from one camp to the next, while allowing ample time to explore en-route. The crystal clear waters of the Mupamhadzi River are a wonderful place to cool off in during the heat of the day.

BEST TIME TO GO ON A SOUTH LUANGWA WALKING SAFARI

The mobile walking safaris are possible from June to October – the Cinderella spot when it is neither too wet nor too hot.

June is the coolest month in southern Africa and as the season goes on it becomes progressively hotter and drier, with the animals concentrating around the last remaining water sources, Even when the temperatures are at their peak it remains a dry, not humid, heat – and that makes all the difference.
