Walking Safaris
in Kenya
Kenya is one of the best African countries to go if you’re looking for great wildlife viewing and freedom to get out in foot.
About Kenya Walking Safaris
Perhaps more than dedicated multi-day walking safaris which are more the preserve of Zambia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, Kenya is somewhere that has an excellent range of choices for safaris that allow you to walk as part of the safari.
This really shines a light on the “walking” part of a walking safari. The truth is that the best walks are never about the hike, but about the wildlife experience. Specifically they’re about seeing large animals on foot without them seeing you. It’s high-adrenaline grandmother’s footsteps.
And some of the best walks involve almost no walking. They can actually be more about sitting quietly – and unobserved – while watching wildlife in its natural setting. Often this can be best achieved by combining different modes of transport – and as importantly being prepared to change your game-viewing plans to suit the moment.
Set off on a game drive and round a corner find an elephant approaching a dam to drink. You could turn a great wildlife sighting into one of the most enduring memories in your life by ditching the car to quietly make your way to a secluded spot and watch the animals on foot.
Kenya does offer one or two dedicated walking safaris, like this camel safari led by samburu guides that takes you on foot through a sensationally wild part of Laikipia. Along the way your mobile camp is carried by camels.
Most countries don’t have the flexibility to offer this approach, but in places like Laikipia this kind of freedom from regulations is what it’s all about.

BEST TIME FOR KENYAWALKING SAFARIS
Walking is possible year-round in Kenya. Do not be deterred by the two “rainy seasons” – the long and the short – as it’s often cooler and less dusty and harsh at this time of year, making it a great time to venture out on foot.
Most of Kenya receives a tiny amount of rain compared to the other classic safari destinations and on occasion the rains fail entirely. So unlike in Southern Africa where there is a strictly delineated season, many camps in Kenya remain open year-round, or only close in April.

Fly Camping
Simple lightweight camps used to support walking safaris are one of the greatest pleasures in the wilderness.
Fly camping is minimalist camping par excellence. Above all, it’s about experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of the African night; myriad stars, the noise of elephants foraging near camp, the calls of hyenas, leopards and lions. Frills are restricted to the essentials: good simple food, cold drinks and a comfortable bed roll.
