Bhutan Trekking
Holidays
Trekking in Bhutan is a complete wilderness experience that sets it apart from walking anywhere else in the Himalaya.
About Bhutan’s Treks
Until the 1960’s there were no roads in Bhutan and the only way to get around the kingdom was on foot. For us it remains the best way to experience the ‘real’ Bhutan and to discover an untouched place of lush yet rugged mountain beauty as well as hidden temples and dzongs shrouded in myths and legends.
From tiny villages in the valleys trails lead up through protected virgin forests of blue pine, hemlock and fir, splashed bright with the blooms of rhododendron in spring, that thin to alpine pastures grazed by yaks. Beside glacial rivers and holy lakes prayer flags and ‘wind horses’ flutter in the wind.
Walking with one of our knowledgeable Bhutanese private guides, your camp and provisions are carried on the backs of ponies or yaks. Trekking at your own pace there’s time to enjoy the wild terrain and experience that incredible feeling you only get when you’re somewhere truly remote.

BEST TIME FOR treks in BHUTAN
Late September to mid-November is the best time for trekking and late March until mid-May is the next best time for high altitude treks in Bhutan. Temperatures are moderate, skies are clear and the views of snow-capped peaks in the Himalayas are spectacular.
In late spring rhododendrons and alpine plants come into flower dotting forested slopes and high meadows with colour.
Winter (December to February) is cold and snow is always a possibility but a handful of low altitude treks in Gangtey and Bumthang can be made; the trails are empty and rates low. Whenever you trek carry waterproof clothing with you as it can rain at any time.

A typical day on a Bhutan trek
Days on trek have a reassuring rhythm. Rising early and walking at your own pace, the series of ups and downs is broken by glimpses of birds and wildlife, mystical stories and jaw dropping views. On reaching camp tents will already be pitched and dinner cooking, then it’s early to bed beneath an enormous star-littered sky.
Our fully supported camping treks offer an unforgettable way to experience some of the finest trekking in the Himalayas. Camp gear and luggage are carried by ponies or yaks so you only need to walk with a daypack. Your friendly crew sets up and dismantles camp, cooks incredible meals in the middle of nowhere, and takes care of all the chores. You sleep in sturdy two man dome tents (or larger A frame tents in some areas) with inflatable thermarest mattresses and hot water bottles to keep you cosy. A mess tent, with chairs and tables, and a toilet tent are provided with warm water for washing.
