About Galapagos by Yacht

For families or groups of friends looking for a once in a lifetime experience, it’s hard to compete with sailing from island to island in the Galapagos with your own private yacht.

Because of the long distances involved, the only practical way to explore the Galapagos is by live-aboard boats which travel between islands. The journey is mostly at night and the boat makes different stops each day; usually two landings with plenty of time for swimming and snorkelling.

The importance of the size of the boat can’t be overstated. The smaller the boat, the more able she is to access the shallow anchorages that the large boats cannot, thus meaning island visits are relatively untroubled by other visitors.

Monserrat is a superb example of a mid range yacht and one of our favourites.  Fully refurbished in 2021, she offer 10 light and airy cabins and larger than average communal areas. Aligning with some of the luxury category yachts, Monserrat also carries two Galapagos guides, a great advantage over other boats in a similar price range, meaning that there are never more than 10-11 in a group on the excursions at any one time.

There are three sun decks with shaded and unshaded areas, paddleboards and kayaks for guest use when not on island visits, as well as snorkelling gear.  Monserrat offers cruises of six and seven nights duration.

WHY WE LOVE YACHTS

Nowhere else on Earth comes close to the intense wildlife experience the Galapagos Islands can offer, and to take this in on-board your own private yacht is truly a special thing to do with your family.

The smaller boat allows access to anchorages that larger boats – and the crowds they bring – can’t get into.

BEST TIME TO EXPLOREGALAPAGOS BY BOAT

Being situated on the equator, Galapagos is a year round destination without a pronounced temperature change through the year.

However from around July, the cold Humboldt current, which comes up from Tierra del Fuego, moves in closer to the islands reducing the sea temperature. Wet suits are generally needed from July to November.

December to June is the slightly warmer and wetter time period with warm waters. Showers, if they come, are short and this is the main breeding period for the birds and animals.

“When you visit the Galápagos Islands you are left in no doubt as to who owns them – the residents. By residents I mean the thousands of birds, sea lions penguins and marine iguanas who call the Islands home. It is a place like no other.

COMBINE WITH MAINLAND ECUADOR

The mainland destinations of Peru and Ecuador offer something completely different to the wildlife experience in the Galapagos, but it works really nicely.

If you are going to combine a trip to South America make sure you take enough time. It is a long way so invest the time and the rewards will be huge.
