EXPLORE

Napo Wildlife Centre

Ecuador’s eastern flank is a land of jungle, the most biodiverse place on our planet. A visit to the Napo Wildlife Centre immerses you in the vibrant, teeming heart of this jungle, situated at the confluence of two rivers.

To reach the Napo Wildlife Centre from Quito, you embark on a 30-minute flight from the capital over the Eastern Andes to Coca. From there, a covered motorboat takes you on a captivating two-and-a-half-hour journey through the lush rainforests of the 2.5 million-acre Yasuni National Park to the meeting point of the Coca and Napo rivers. The final stretch is the truly epic part, as you transfer to a dugout canoe to navigate up the Anangu Creek, finally arriving at the lodge on the banks of Anangu Lake.

The journey is more than worth it, as the setting is truly outstanding. The Napo Wildlife Centre features 20 thatch-roofed cabins, including 12 doubles and eight suites, all strategically positioned on the banks of the lake, offering breathtaking views across the water to the surrounding forest. However, the most spectacular view of all is from the observation platform atop the six-story canopied main lodge building, which provides a panoramic vista over the forest canopy.

With over 600 species of birds inhabiting this part of the Amazonian rainforest, birdwatching is an obvious draw, whether you’re seeking macaws or hoatzins. But the Napo Wildlife Centre offers more than that. Guided walks provide opportunities to spot ocelots, tapirs, turtles, and even anacondas, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich biodiversity of the Amazonian jungle

BEST TIME TO VISITNapo Wildlife Centre

June to November: This period is often considered the best time to visit the Napo Wildlife Centre. During these months, water levels are higher, allowing for canoe exploration deeper into the flooded forest. The weather is generally drier, and there are fewer insects. Wildlife is still abundant and relatively easy to spot due to the lush vegetation.

December to May: This season experiences more frequent rainfall, and water levels in rivers and oxbow lakes are lower. The rainforest is especially lush and vibrant during this time, and many animals give birth to their young. While there are more insects, the wet season can be a unique experience for those who enjoy birdwatching and spotting amphibians and reptiles.
