Easter Island
Over two thousand miles to the west of Chile and definitely not to be ignored is the utterly unique volcanic Island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). With the nearest landmass being the barely inhabited Pitcairn Islands 1,280 miles away, it is perhaps not surprising that, prior to the arrival of European explorers on Easter day in 1722, the Polynesian inhabitants had thought that their island was the whole universe. Although only 15 miles across there is something wonderfully magical about Rapa Nui’s rolling green landscape dotted with over 600 enigmatic Moais, rocky coves and azure seas that, together with its fascinating history and archaeological sites, entice you to want to change the date on your flight ticket.
The imperious Moai keep watch from all corners of this intriguing island where horses and cows roam free but, due to its petite size, all sites are easily accessible from the Bohemian town of Hanga Roa where most visitors base themselves. Although much of the history of the Moai remains a mystery, it is recommended that you take a guide to explore the key sites as the history that is known is fascinating and the myriad theories about what is more elusive certainly captures the imagination.
If time allows, it is also worth taking some time to explore on one’s own by foot, bike or rental car.
